Football Upended By Wisconsin-La Crosse

Kilpatrick and Jefferson score touchdowns for the WSU offense.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football squad (0-3 overall) showed improvement on both sides of the ball but fell to visiting Wisconsin-La Crosse (1-2 overall) 47-13 on Saturday afternoon at rain-soaked Tom Adams Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Warriors garnered a pair of first downs on the game's opening drive before being forced to put from around midfield.

The Eagles drove 71 yards in 11 plays using over four minutes on the clock to grab a 7-0 advantage on a two-yard plunge by Brady Kuhn.

On the second play of the ensuing drive, WSU true freshman quarterback Nikkos Davis (Warren, Mich. / Macomb Dakota), who was making his first career start, was intercepted.

UWL went 60 yards in 10 plays as Kyle Haas tossed a two-yard scoring pass to Calahan Miles to cap off a drive that lasted 4:35.

Second Quarter
Wayne State's next drive carried over from the first stanza, but ended with a punt.

Wisconsin-La Crosse drove to the WSU 35-yard line but a punt by the quarterback on fourth down went for a touchback.

On the first play of the ensuing drive Davis found sophomore wideout Kristian Kilpatrick (Fenton, Mich.) alone down the left sideline for an 80-yard scoring strike.  It was the 11th longest (tied) scoring pass in 108 years of WSU football.   

It was Davis' first career touchdown pass and Kilpatrick's first career touchdown reception.  He had three career receptions for 14 yards prior to this play, including one catch in the first period.

The Eagles went 72 yards in 11 plays following the kickoff to extend their margin to 21-7.  Marc Coy had a one-yard touchdown run with 3:32 remaining before intermission.

An interception and back-to-back punts ended the opening half.

Third Quarter
The Warrior defense forced a three-and-out to start the second half, but the WSU offense also went three-and-out.  

Kuhn raced in from 26 yards on a second-and-10 play to the next possession.

Following a 53-yard punt by Griffin Nowak (Livonia, Mich. / Franklin) and a negative five-yard return, UWL had the ball at its own 29.  This drive concluded with a 30-yard field goal by Maddox Pratt to make it 31-7.  

An illegal wedge formation on the kickoff return moved the ball back to the Wayne State eight-yard line.  On third down, Davis was attempting to elude the rush but was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone.

Fourth Quarter
The Eagles tandem of Haas and Miles teamed up for a 14-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth period.

After a WSU reception and fumble, that was returned 30 yards by UWL's Jake Bova, the guests used two plays to cover 19 yards with Owen Leitel scoring on a 13-yard jaunt to make it 47-7.

Following a touchback on the ensuing kickoff, Wayne State drove 75 yards in seven plays scoring on a 16-yard scamper by true freshman Gary Jefferson, Jr. (Bastrop, Texas).  Key plays on the scoring drive included a 14-yard run by Jefferson, Jr. on second-and-four, a 14-yard reception by Jordan Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich. / St. Joseph) on third-and-four and a 15-yard personal foul penalty on the Eagles.

UWL ran 12 plays to run out the clock.

TEAM STATS
Wisconsin-La Crosse held a 442-220 advantage in total offense and ran 80 plays to WSU's 47.  UWL held the ball for 39:42, while the Warriors held possession for 20:18.  The Eagles rushed for 201 yards, compared to 81 for Wayne State.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Jefferson, Jr. rushed for a team-best 68 yards and one score, while Davis passed for 139 yards and one touchdown on 10-of-23.  Kilpatrick had three receptions for 91 yards.  Bell led the squad with 105 all-purpose yards, which included six kickoff returns for 81 yards.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Kuhn gained a game-high 69 rushing yards, while scoring two touchdowns.  Haas completed 17-of-27 passes for 241 yards and two scores.  Nolan Wulf had game-high totals of seven receptions and 112 receiving yards.  Both of Miles' receptions went for touchdowns.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Quincy.  Kickoff is slated for 1 PM Central Time in the Gem City of Quincy, Ill.
