Football Finishes Non-League Slate With 56-35 Setback At Quincy

Bentley totals four rushing touchdowns.

Box Score QUINCY, Ill. -- The Wayne State University football team (0-4 overall) played its final non-conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon at Quincy University (2-2 overall) and the Hawks prevailed 56-35.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After the wSU offense had to punt on the game's first possession, the Hawks went 82 yards in 10 plays with quarterback Bradyn Little scoring on a eight-yard run on a third down play. The big play of the drive was a 32-yard pass from Little Tykell Hammers.

WSU went for it on a fourth-and-three from its own 42 on the ensuing drive, but running back Gary Jefferson, Jr. (Bastrop, Texas) was stopped for no gain. It took Quincy just two minutes and four plays to extend its lead to 14-0 on a eight-yard pass from Little to Elijah Genenbacher.

Wayne State responded with an eight play, 85-yard drive in 3:22 with graduate student running back D'Vaun Bentley (Detroit Mich. / Loyola [Lawrence Tech]) scoring on a 29-yard scamper. The big play on the drive was a 41-yard reception by Bentley to move the ball into QU territory.

Second Quarter
On the first play of the second stanza, the Hawks pushed their lead to 21-7 on 63-yard jaunt out of the wildcat by Collin Parsons.

After a WSU interception, the Quincy offense went three-and-out.

The Warriors pulled within seven at 21-14 as Bentley scored on a 14-yard run that was initially ruled down at the one, but a challenge by head coach Terrence Isaac, Sr. was successful as Bentley rolled over the would be tackler into the end zone.

Quincy linebacker Jordan Elmore was ejected for targeting as freshman quarterback Nikkos Davis (Warren, Mich. / Macomb Dakota) slid down at the Quincy 24, two plays before Bentley's touchdown. Bentley's two rushing touchdowns marks the first multi-rushing TD performance by a Warrior running back since Jeremiah Sterling has three rushing touchdowns vs. Roosevelt on November 9, 2024.

The Hawks re-established its 14-point advantage with a seven-play, 75-yard drive culminating in a nine-yard rush.

On the second play after the kickoff, freshman quarterback Torrence Searcy (Romulus, Mich.) lost a fumble and QU added to its lead with an eight play scoring drive on a one-yard plunge by Aaron Harvey.

Searcy had one completion to Jefferson, Jr. for a first down but his third-down pass in the final minute of the half was intercepted and Quincy's Little capped off the drive with a 19-yard scamper with 16.9 seconds left before intermission.

Third Quarter
Wayne State attempted and recovered an onside kick to start the second half, however, the Warriors were forced to punt. The Hawks increased its margin to 48-14 with a nine-play, 77-yard drive with Little tossing a 30-yard scoring strike to Jackson Burnett on a third-and-10 play.

A Wayne State punt on the ensuing drive, preceded a seven-play, 89-yard scoring drive by Quincy that concluded on a 15-yard run by Parsons.

On the first play from scrimmage, Bentley broke off a 45-yard run. A drive into the red zone, ended with an interception in the end zone.

On the next play, senior defensive lineman Emmanuel Ajayi (Saint Paul, Minn. / North Saint Paul [Clarion]) recovered a Quincy fumble.

Fourth Quarter
A third consecutive run by Bentley wrapped-up a 24-yard scoring drive to make it 56-21.

The Hawks punted on their next possession, and Wayne State drove 81 yards in nine plays with wide receiver Kristian Kilpatrick (Fenton, Mich.) taking a shovel pass from true freshman quarterback Brody Thompson (Lake Orion, Mich.). It was Thompson's first career touchdown pass, and Kilpatrick's second receiving touchdown in as many weeks.

On the first play by Quincy, cornerback Mar'Tavion Robinson (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly [Davenport]) forced and recovered a fumble. Five plays later, Bentley notched his fourth rushing touchdown of the contest on a 11-yard jaunt to complete the scoring at 56-35.

TEAM STATS
Quincy won the total offense battle 490-360, but WSU had 251 rushing yards to the Hawks 204.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Bentley rushed for 182 yards on 19 carries with four touchdowns, along with two receptions for 50 yards. Thompson was 4-of-9 with one touchdown.

LEADING THE HAWKS
Parsons had a team-high 158 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Little was 18-of-26 for 286 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for two touchdowns.

UP NEXT
Wayne State begins GLIAC play at No. 6-ranked Grand Valley State (4-0 overall). The Lakers were idle this weekend, after posting a 96-0 win over Judson on Sept. 19. Kickoff for GVSU's Homecoming game is slated for 3 PM at Lubbers Stadium. The Warriors return to Tom Adams Field on Oct. 10 for their annual Homecoming contest vs. Roosevelt. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
