DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer team (6-0-2 overall, 2-0-2 GLIAC) battled the Northern Michigan Wildcats (4-3-2 overall, 1-3-1 GLIAC) to a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon at the WSU Soccer Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Northern Michigan recorded the first shot on goal of the contest at 9:01, but Wayne State quickly answered. After regaining possession, freshman midfielder
Molly Labate (Clarkston, Mich.) carried the ball through the midfield before finding junior forward
Jess Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron [Schoolcraft C.C.]), who fired a left-footed shot into the bottom-left corner of the net at 10:05. The goal was Clyde's second of the season and second in as many matches.
The Warriors continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half, recording six shots and three corner kicks, while putting pressure on the Wildcats' defense.
Northern Michigan evened the match at 38:54 when Madalyn Nissen converted a penalty kick following a foul called on Wayne State's redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich [Cincinnati]).
Second Half
Wayne State outshot Northern Michigan 8-3 in the second half and earned five corner kicks. The Warriors created several opportunities, but were unable to find a go-ahead goal.
Helfen made two saves during the second half, including a stop on a shot from Madison Bilbia in the 49th minute. On the other side, Northern Michigan goalkeeper Carly Sides denied two WSU attempts to keep the match even through the final whistle.

Helfen recorded four saves for the Warriors, while Sides made three saves of her own for the Wildcats.

Wayne State will hit the road Sunday for a rematch against Purdue Northwest at noon (ET) at Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind. The Warriors and Lions played to a 2-2 draw in their first meeting on Sept. 18 at the WSU Soccer Complex.
