Women's Soccer Rallies After Losing 2-0 Lead, To Win 3-2 At PNW

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's soccer squad (7-0-2 overall, 3-0-2 GLIAC) concluded the first half of the 2026 regular season by winning 3-2 at Purdue Northwest (4-4-2 overall, 2-3-1 GLIAC) on Sunday.  The victory moved the Warriors into sole possession of third place in the GLIAC standings with 11 points with nine league games remaining.  After a scoreless first half, WSU tallied two goals less than three minutes apart, but the Lions scored the next two goals to even the match at 2-2, before Wayne State scored the game winner in the final four minutes of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
In an evenly played opening 45 minutes that ended scoreless, WSU had a 5-4 edge in total shots attempted, while the Lions led 3-1 in shots on goal. PNW held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks, with both teams being whistled for four fouls apiece.

Second Half
Just over 10 minutes after intermission, Purdue Northwest fouled Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) outside the box.  Sophomore Emily Mendrick (Troy, Mich. / Troy Athens [Ashland]) netted her first goal as a Warrior scoring from 30 yards out on the free kick.

Less than three minutes later, Wayne State extended its margin to 2-0.  Redshirt freshman midfielder Kate Carrico (Brighton, Mich. [Western Michigan]) played the ball back to captain Reagan Brengman (Harrison Township, Mich. / Warren Regina [Northwood]) on WSU's defensive half of the field.  Brengman's long ball bounced once outside the box, and after a bounce inside the 18, Mroue was able to head the ball past Purdue Northwest goalkeeper Meta Fischer in the 59th minute.

Nearly six minutes later, the Lions were able to cut their deficit in half as the hosts were awarded a penalty kick.  Sofia Camarillo beat WSU goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) low to Helfen's left.

With just over 11 minutes remaining in the match, PNW's Sarah Scaling played a long ball that got through three WSU defenders and Mia Davis was able to put a shot past Helfen.

The game appeared headed for another 2-2 draw (the squads played to a 2-2 tie at Wayne State just nine days ago), but Mroue had a corner kick with about four minutes left that was cleared away but WSU freshman defender Morgan Wilcox (Imlay City, Mich. / Lapeer) played the ball to the edge of the box where Mroue headed the ball towards the PK spot.  Wayne State freshman Samantha Powers (Grand Ledge, Mich.) was able to out-jump the defender and head the ball in off the post to Fischer's right with 3:44 remaining.

Wayne State totaled 15 shot attempts in the second half, including nine on goal (scoring on three of those), while Purdue Northwest had four shot attempts with three being on goal (two goals and one save).

GOALKEEPER INFORMATION
Helfen improved her record to 6-0-2 by making three saves.  Fischer was credited with seven saves, including six in the second half.

Wayne State will play its next match a week from today (Sunday, Oct. 4) at Davenport (4-2-3 overall, 2-2-1 GLIAC).
