DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (14-5, 6-5 GLIAC) was defeated,
3-2, by Michigan Tech (9-10, 7-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei despite an impressive double-double by senior
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln).
The Warriors took a 2-1 lead (25-23, 24-26, 25-17) before dropping the next two sets to the Huskies (26-24, 15-9) who extended their winning streak to three matches. Wayne State, conversely, has lost three in a row.
Gosselin matched her career-high with 21 kills to go with 16 digs. She hit .360 for the match and contributed two blocks and two service aces.
Kate Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) and
Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) were also effective at the net for WSU. Sak totaled 13 kills, hit .500 with just two errors and collected six blocks, while Mallast had 11 kills with five blocks.
An early 10-4 run by the Huskies forced the Warriors into a timeout with the score 13-7 in favor of the visitors. Wayne State battled back to tie it at 19-19 on its way to a narrow 25-23 victory. Gosselin and Jenich had five and four kills, respectively, while Gosselin and
Jessica Condeni (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) each had four digs.
The second set was also tightly contested and, despite Wayne State matching their high hitting percentage from the first (.382), Michigan Tech's .407 clip gave the Huskies the slight edge in a 26-24 result.
Wayne State took a 5-4 lead early in the third and held the advantage for the remainder of the set, a 25-17 win highlighted by four kills each from Gosselin and Sak.
Kristine Sexton, who like Gosselin also reached the 20-kill mark in the match, had seven in the fourth set which also required an extra point to decide. A 9-4 run produced a 17-11 lead for the Huskies, who at set point relinquished three straight WSU scores to tie it up at 24-24. Following an MTU timeout, the Huskies took the next two points, forcing a fifth set.
A 6-3 lead for WSU quickly became an 8-6 lead for Michigan Tech thanks to a five-point run. After the Warriors tied it at 9-9, the Huskies went on a six-point run to close out the match.
Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) finished with 15 digs, and
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) racked up 11 digs and three service aces.
Michigan Tech's Veronica Armstrong led all players with 23 digs.
Wayne State will travel to Lansing next weekend for the second annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover. Its opponents will be determined early next week.
