Terriers score two extra-attacker goals late in third

DETROIT - In the 2009-10 home opener, the Wayne State University women's hockey team (0-1-2) skated to a 4-4 overtime tie with ninth-ranked Boston University (1-0-3) on Friday night at the City Sports Center.

The Terriers scored two extra-attacker goals within the final 1:23 of regulation, including Tara Watchorn's game-tying goal with two seconds remaining.  All four of BU's games this season have gone to overtime, while WSU tied for the second straight game.

For Wayne State, Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont. / Bluewater Hawks) scored twice for her first career multiple-goal game, and Jenaya Townsend (Sherwood Park, Alb. / Sherwood Park Kings) finished with a pair of assists.

After a scoreless first period, Julie Hebert (Chelmsford, Ont. / Aurora Jr. Panthers) lit the lamp with her second goal of the season at the 1:09 mark.  From behind the cage, Lauren Ragen (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Connecticut Polar Bears) found Hebert in space between the circles for the quick shot.  Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ont. / NCCP Junior Raiders) also assisted on the play.

A power-play goal from Jill Cardella, her first of two goals on the night, at 6:25 tied it up.  Kasey Boucher passed it along the blue line to Sarah Appleton, whose shot was deflected in front on the left side by Cardella past WSU goaltender Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man. / Notre Dame Hounds).

Protopapas, who scored both her goals on power plays, notched the first at 9:00 of the second period, with assists from Townsend and Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich. / Little Caesars).  It became a 3-1 game at 15:59 with Jaclyn Stapleton's (Westbank, B.C. / Pursuit of Excellence) first career goal, which took a strange bounce in front of BU goaltender Alissa Fromkin.  Adrianna Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Belle Tire U-19), who recorded her first point since Feb. 8, 2008, earned an assist.

A short shot from the left side by Cardella, with help from Lauren Cherewyk and Jillian Kirchner, brought the Terriers back within one at 17:37.

Nearly 20 minutes went by until Protopapas' second power-play tally at 16:47 of the third period from Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / North American Hockey Academy) - earning her first collegiate point - and Townsend.

With Fromkin pulled for an extra attacker, Melissa Anderson made it a 4-3 game with 1:23 remaining in regulation.  Boston University proceeded to call a timeout.

A tripping penalty to Kirchner at 19:13 seemed to seal the Terriers' fate, but a subsequent checking call on Gina Buquet (Lafayette, La. / Ohio Flames) with five seconds left gave BU one last opportunity.

On a faceoff to the left of Brian, Anderson pulled the puck back to Watchorn, who fired a quick shot past Brian to tie it at 4-4 and send it to overtime.

Boston had three shots to WSU's one in the extra period, but neither side could net the game-winner.

Brian and Fromkin finished with 26 and 22 saves, respectively.

Wayne State and Boston University will meet again Saturday afternoon at 4:00.  Fans in attendance for the Wayne State - Ferris State football game at noon can get free admission to the hockey game with a football ticket stub.
