DETROIT - Two straight Boston University goals ultimately led to a 4-2 loss for the Wayne State University women's hockey team (0-2-2) on Saturday afternoon at the City Sports Center. Jenelle Kohanchuk scored a school-record four goals for the ninth-ranked Terriers (2-0-3).
Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) and Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) lit the lamp for Wayne State four minutes apart in the second period, but two consecutive power-play goals for Kohanchuk led to BU's second win of the year and first game to end in regulation.
Boston University wasted little time in getting on the board, as a turnover in the WSU zone provided an opportunity for Kohanchuk to score just 16 seconds into the game. Melissa Anderson earned her first of two assists on the play.
Kohanchuk collected a loose puck at center ice and skated in on Lindsey Park (Thornhill, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros), who made the initial save before Kohanchuk put in her own rebound at 5:56 to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.
Seconds later, after the puck traveled into the BU zone on the center-ice draw, an attempted clearance was intercepted by Baldin, who fired a shot from the left side to get the Warriors on the board at 6:05.
On a Wayne State power-play, Protopapas put in a rebound off a shot from Veronique Laramee-Paquette (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) for her third goal of the series which tied it at 2-2.
Quick passing in the WSU zone on a BU power-play from Tara Watchorn, who assisted on the final two goals, and Anderson led to an open shot for Kohanchuk, giving her the hat trick at the 15:20 mark.
Jillian Kirchner nearly made it a 4-2 game with 13 seconds left in the second, but Park came up with a big breakaway stop, one of her 20 saves on the afternoon.
At 5:07 in the third, a power-play goal by Kohanchuk from Jonnie Bloemers and Watchorn capped off the scoring.
Haber finished with 18 saves and improved to 2-0-2 on the year.
Wayne State is on the road the next two weekends for series at Colgate (Oct. 23-24) and Bemidji State (Oct. 30-31).
