Warriors hold on for 4-3 victory at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (1-2-2) scored three goals in the third period and held off a late Colgate University charge for a 4-3 win over the Raiders (1-4-0) on Friday night at Starr Rink.

Tallies from Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy), Adrianna Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Belle Tire U-19) and Veronique Laramee-Paquette (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead in the third period.  Late penalties and a move by Colgate to pull goaltender Kimberly Sass created a 6-on-3 situation which led to a CU goal with 26 seconds remaining.

The Raiders could not get the equalizer, however, and Wayne State hung on for its first victory of the year.

After the fourth scoreless first period of WSU's season, Colgate broke the tie at 5:16 of the second on Beth Rotenberg's first goal of the season from Jenna Klynstra and Nicole McDonald.

Ten minutes later, in a 4-on-4 situation, freshman Gina Buquet's (Lafayette, La./Ohio Flames) second tally of the year from Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) made it a 1-1 game.  With 2:01 remaining in the period, however, the Raiders reclaimed their one-goal lead on Amanda Kirwan's first goal of the season.

Ingratta's first collegiate goal from Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ont./NCCP Junior Raiders) at 1:48 of the third period tied it at 2-2.  Pfeffer gave Wayne State its first lead of the game at 12:10 with her fourth career goal, assisted by Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich./Little Caesars).

With 1:40 left in regulation, Laramee-Paquette netted what proved to be the game-winner with what transpired in the final minute, as Brittany Philips scored at 19:34 to pull the Raiders within one.

Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) made 22 saves and held Colgate to a 1-for-7 mark on its power plays to improve to 1-0-2 on the season.  Sass stopped 26 shots including 10 in the final period.

Wayne State and Colgate will meet again Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
