DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (17-6, 6-6 GLIAC) suffered its fourth consecutive conference loss on Friday night, a
3-1 result against Northwood University (7-16, 5-7 GLIAC) at the Matthaei.
The Timberwolves, who had previously lost five in a row, avenged their setback to the Warriors in September at Northwood. The Warriors, meanwhile, had their three-match winning streak established at last weekend's Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover snapped.
Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln),
Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Kate Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) were Wayne State's top performers. Gosselin finished with 14 kills and nine digs, while Mallast compiled 13 kills and six blocks. Sak totaled 10 kills, six blocks and five digs.
Coming out of a timeout in the opening set, the Timberwolves turned a 13-10 deficit in to a 17-16 lead, prompting the Warriors to call a timeout of their own. Northwood won three of the final four points to secure a 25-23 victory.
In the longest set of the season, Wayne State surrendered two straight points as Northwood tied it at 24-24. The Warriors served at set point five more times, but each time the Timberwolves stayed alive until they were able to grab a lead at 30-29 on a service ace from Samantha Hausmann. A kill from Sladjana Mitrovic gave NU a 2-0 overall lead.
A six-point run turned a 9-8 deficit into a 14-9 lead for WSU in the third set. They led the rest of the way to a 25-19 win, forcing a fourth set. Mallasregistered five of her six blocks in the third.
Northwood led wire-to-wire in the final set, a 25-18 result which was capped off by a pair of kills from Mitrovic, two of her six kills in the set.
Splitting time at the setter position were
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) and
Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.), who had 23 and 17 assists, respectively.
Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) led the Warriors with 13 digs, while
Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) had 11 and
Jessica Condeni (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) collected eight.
Wayne State travels to Ohio next weekend to face Ashland on Friday and Tiffin on Saturday.
