HAMILTON, N.Y. - Sophomore forward
Veronique Laramee-Paquette's (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) power-play goal 13 seconds into overtime gave the Wayne State University women's hockey team (2-2-2) a
1-0 victory at Colgate University (1-5-0) on Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink.
After each team had a goal waved off in the third period, the Raiders and Warriors ended regulation scoreless. However, a holding penalty to Brittany Philips with 58 seconds left in the third presented Wayne State with its seventh power-play opportunity, and Laramee-Paquette cashed in with her second goal of the year from freshmen
Gina Buquet (Lafayette, La./Ohio Flames) and
Jenaya Townsend (Sherwood Park, Alb./Sherwood Park Kings).
Sophomore goaltender
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) made 22 saves and stymied all nine of Colgate's nine power-play opportunities to earn her second shutout of the season and third of her career. Lisa Plenderleith stopped 30 of 31 shots for the Raiders.
For the Warriors, Saturday marked the second game this season in which they have ended regulation in a 0-0 tie with their opponents. Wayne State has just one other 1-0 overtime victory in its history, coincidently the program's first-ever victory at Minnesota State on Oct. 14, 2000.
Early in the third period, the Raiders had a goal disallowed due to a highsticking call. Wayne State's initial go-ahead tally was called back late in regulation for having a penalized player leave the penalty box early.
Laramee-Paquette's goal gave the Warriors an 11-10-0 lead in the all-time series and its first sweep of the Raiders, as the two teams split every prior two-game series dating back to 2000. Her tally was also the second-fastest overtime goal in school history.
Wayne State will travel to Bemidji State next weekend, Oct. 30-31, before returning home to face top-ranked Mercyhurst, Nov. 6-7, in the first College Hockey America series of the season.
