MADISON, Wis. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (3-5-3) skated to a
2-2 tie at the University of Wisconsin (6-4-1) on Thursday evening at the Kohl Center. Freshman
Gina Buquet's (Lafayette, La./Ohio Flames) extra-attacker goal with 61 seconds remaining in regulation erased a 2-1 deficit against the defending NCAA champion.
The Warriors, who had lost each of their five prior meetings with the Badgers, improved to 1-0-3 in overtime games this season. Since the 2006-07 season, Wayne State has lost just one of its 17 overtime games (7-1-9).
Sophomore
Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) assisted on both Warrior tallies for her second multiple-point game of the season and seventh of her career.
Senior
Lindsey Park (Thornhill, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros) stopped 29 shots including 14 in a scoreless second period and four in overtime. Wisconsin's Becca Ruegsegger made 26 saves.
Geena Prough put the Badgers on the board at 2:51 of the opening period, but
Chelsea Burnett's (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) first tally of the year on a power-play at 13:44, with assists from Baldin and
Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ont./NCCP Junior Raiders), tied it at 1-1.
The score remained tied until 13:29 of the third, when Kyla Sanders scored her second goal of the year.
Wayne State out-shot Wisconsin, 11-6, in the third period, but it was Baldin's shot as the final minute of regulation approached which produced the game-tying goal.
In overtime, the Badgers had four shots on goal and another which hit the goalpost. The Warriors also had to kill a penalty until the end of the extra period.
Wayne State and No. 6 Wisconsin will meet again Friday afternoon at 3:07 p.m. ET.
