GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team defeated Calvin College,
164-74, in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon.
In his first meet as a Warrior,
Joaquin Abascal Gallegos (Madrid, Spain) recorded two NCAA “A” qualifying times in the 400 individual medley (4:00.26) and the 100 breaststroke (56.88). He also won the 100 freestyle (47.38).
With a first-place time of 16:11.70 in the 1650 freestyle,
Oskar Nordstrand (Stockholm, Sweden) earned “B” cuts in both the 1650 and the 1000 free (9:46.17) events. Nordstrand also won the 500 free (4:46.39).
Diver
Cayce Bolt (Sterling Hts., Mich./Warren Mott) won both the one-meter (309.55) and three-meter (313.80) competitions and improved upon his prior national cuts in each.
Other winners Saturday included
Andrew Paige (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) in the 200 free (1:48.47),
Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in the 50 free (21.87),
Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) in the 100 butterfly (52.11), and
Nathan Hesche (Jackson, Mich.) in the 100 back (53.00).
The 200 medley relay of Bedran,
Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), Hesche, and
Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) turned in a first place time of 1:36.32.
Wayne State's next competition is Dec. 4-5 at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
