DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (18-8, 7-8 GLIAC) dropped a 3-1 decision (25-16, 25-17, 20-25, 25-15) to Hillsdale College (19-7, 11-4 GLIAC) on Friday evening at the Matthaei.
Despite the loss, Wayne State can still secure the final open slot in the GLIAC Tournament with a victory tomorrow over Findlay. Northwood, which was a game back coming into play tonight, lost a five-set battle to the Oilers.
Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) had a double-double, finishing with 15 kills and 14 digs. Getting the start at libero was freshman Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill), who compiled 18 digs and had a pair of service aces.
The Chargers jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the opening set, prompting a WSU timeout. The Warriors subsequently won seven of the next eight points to tie it up at 11-11. Hillsdale closed out the set, however, on a 14-5 run.
Hillsdale led wire-to-wire in the second set, but in the third Wayne State battled out of a 8-3 hole to take a 13-10 lead, forcing the Chargers to use both timeouts during the comeback. The Warriors held the visitors at bay the rest of the set for a 25-20 win, as Jenich registered seven of her 15 kills in the set.
It was all Hillsdale in the fourth, however, as its 25-15 victory gave the first-place Chargers the match. Ashley Crowder, who also posted a double-double, had five of her 17 kills and five of her 15 digs in the final set.
Kate Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) contributed six blocks and nine kills, while Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) and Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) totaled 14 and 11 digs, respectively. Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) matched her season-high with six kills.
Wayne State will close out the regular season and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 against Findlay.
