Warriors Nab Last Tourney Slot With 3-2 Win Over Findlay

Gosselin posts double-double on Senior Day

DETROIT - The Wayne State University volleyball team (19-8, 8-8 GLIAC) secured its second consecutive berth in the GLIAC Tournament after defeating the University of Findlay (15-18, 5-11 GLIAC) in five sets on Saturday afternoon as the Warriors celebrated Senior Day at the Matthaei.

Prior to the match, the Warriors recognized their senior class of Jessica Condeni (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison), Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln), Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino), Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) and Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay).

All five of the seniors contributed to the victory, with Gosselin and Jenich each recording a double-double in their final home match.  Gosselin totaled 19 kills and 19 digs, while Jenich finished with 12 kills and 15 digs.

Leone had a season-high eight kills along with four digs and a pair of blocks.  Mallast contributed four blocks and three kills, and Condeni totaled four digs and was 21-for-21 on serves.

In the first set, the Oilers went on an eight-point run to turn a 14-8 deficit into a 16-14 lead.  Findlay's lead went to 21-19 until Wayne State took four straight points and held on for a 25-23 win.

Findlay led for the duration of the second set on its way to a 25-19 result, but a 16-7 Warrior run in the third gave the home team a 2-1 overall advantage.  Gosselin led the Warriors with seven kills in the third.

The Oilers took their first lead of the fourth set at 16-15, forcing WSU to take a timeout.  The Warriors tied it at 16 but trailed the rest of the way as Findlay won, 25-22, to take the match to a fifth set.

Leads of 4-1 and 7-2 for Wayne State prompted Findlay to use both of its timeouts.  The set ended 15-5 on a six-point WSU run, highlighted by three kills from freshman Kate Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino).

Sak finished with 13 kills and led the team with a .611 hitting percentage, the second-best mark of any Warrior this season.  Classmate Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) compiled 48 assists as well as five digs and three blocks.

Wayne State will travel to Ashland for the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
