SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (4-7-3, 1-3-0 CHA) came away with a split series in its weekend trip to Syracuse (9-7-1, 4-2-0 CHA) following the Orange's
3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Freshman
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy) scored with under four minutes left in regulation to pull WSU within one, and the Warriors removed goaltender
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) for an extra attacker in the waning seconds, but the Warriors could not get the equalizer as Syracuse defeated WSU for the first time in six tries.
Each team successfully killed a penalty in a fast-paced, but scoreless, first period. Saturday was the eighth time that Wayne State has played to a 0-0 deadlock with its opponent through the first 20 minutes.
During a 4-on-4 situation, Stefanie Marty took the puck up the right wing into WSU territory and fired a wrist shot just under the crossbar for her team-leading ninth goal of the season at 1:23 of the second period.
With just under 14 minutes remaining in the period, Lisa Mullan skated in and found a seam between the WSU defensemen. With an open look, she snuck a short shot between the pads of Brian for her third tally of the year at the 6:06 mark.
On a Wayne State power-play,
Veronique Laramee-Paquette's (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) cross-ice feed found
Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres), who fired a shot from the left side which Lucy Schoedel stopped.
Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) was there for the rebound, however, and her third of the season made it a 2-1 game at 8:29.
The eventual game-winner came from Julie Rising at 10:55 of the third period, as she redirected a wrister from Isabel Menard over Brian's blocker during a 5-on-3 Orange power-play.
Laramee-Paquette blocked a shot at the blue line and skated up with Ingratta for a 2-on-1 with less than four minutes left in the period. Laramee-Paquette sent the puck over to Ingratta, who made a nice fake to her backhand and scored at the 16:13 mark.
Shots on goal went in WSU's favor, 29-26. Brian and Schoedel finished with 23 and 27 saves, respectively. Both squads went 1-for-4 on power plays.
Wayne State will close out the 2009 calendar year with a CHA series next weekend at Niagara.
