Quotes

Detroit
– The Wayne State women's basketball team was unable to carry over its momentum from Thursday's win Saturday as the Warriors (3-12, 1-9 GLIAC) lost 79-55 to Lake Superior (9-5, 6-4 GLIAC).

The highlight of the day for WSU came at the 1:03 mark in the first half when senior guard Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) hit a corner jumper to give her 1,000 points for her career. Bowers, who finished the game with 13 points, is just the 15th player in WSU history to score 1,000 points.

Sophomore guard Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) produced team-highs of 15 points and eight rebounds while shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-4 from three-point range. Thomas was on the court for 37 minutes, the most minutes played during a game in her college career.

Freshman guard Tyler Hardy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) once again scored in double figures with 10 points. Hardy also led the Warriors with three assists.

As a team, WSU held a 21-8 advantage in bench scoring and tied Lake Superior in points in the paint (20-20) and second-chance points (10-10). However, LSS had the edge in forced turnovers (15-13), rebounds (36-28) and field goal percentage (51.1 percent to 38.3 percent).

After the Lakers started out the game on a 9-2 run, Wayne State played even with the visitors for the remainder of the opening period and was able to keep its deficit to just nine points heading into halftime thanks to a 7-4 run in the final 2:26 of half that was highlighted by five points from Bowers and two points from sophomore guard Kiara Smith (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance).

But a slow start would once again plague the Warriors as Lake Superior began the second half on a 17-0 run to gain a commanding 51-25 lead. Wayne State would not score its first bucket of the period until the 14:56 mark when freshman guard Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) converted a layup. The next eight minutes would see the Lakers' lead stay in the 20-point range before gaining their largest lead of the night of 30 points (75-45) with five minutes left to play.

However, the game concluded with the Warriors on a 10-4 run to cut the 30-point lead down to 24 (79-55).

Emily Joseph scored 24 points for Lake Superior.

Wayne State will continue its January homestand on Thursday against Ferris State at 5:30 p.m.
