HAMDEN, Conn. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (8-11-3) was swept on the road by Quinnipiac University (13-7-6) following Saturday afternoon's
4-1 loss at the TD Bank Sports Center.
The Warriors, who for the second day in a row did not have a single power-play opportunity, were held to a season-low 12 shots on goal by the Bobcats, winners of six straight.
Neither team was able to light the lamp over the first two periods. Wayne State has skated to a 0-0 tie with its opponents through the first 20 minutes 14 times this season and four times in as many games.
Kallie Flor snapped the tie with her first of two goals on the afternoon just 16 seconds into the third period. Jordan Elkins earned her first of three assists on the play.
Micheline Frappier's (Val Caron, Ont./Sudbury Lady Wolves) point streak reached three games as she scored her third goal of the year at 2:04, with an assist from
Jaclyn Stapleton (Westbank, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence), her second helper of the season.
The 1-1 tie was short-lived, however, as Kristen Eklund's goal at 2:56 gave the Bobcats the lead for the duration of the game. Flor added her second tally of the contest at 13:48, and Janine Duffy tacked on an empty-netter in the final minute.
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) and Victoria Vigilanti finished with 28 and 11 saves, respectively. Brian also kept Quinnipiac off the board on its four power-play chances.
Wayne State returns home next weekend, Jan. 29-30, to host College Hockey America rival Syracuse. Friday's opener is Doc Andrews Alumni Night, with proceeds going to benefit the Doc Andrews Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Warriors will also officially commence their 10th Anniversary celebration.
