Bedran wins two individual events on Senior Day


DETROIT - The third-ranked Wayne State men's swimming and diving team were narrowly defeated by top-ranked Grand Valley State, 155-145, on Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei, snapping WSU's four-year winning streak in dual meets against GVSU.

Joaquin Abascal Gallegos (Madrid, Spain) won two individual events, earning NCAA “B” qualifiers in the 200 freestyle (1:42.72) and the 200 backstroke (1:52.24), and led off the first-place 400 free relay (3:08.15) with Justin Shields (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), Nathan Hesche (Jackson, Mich.), and Cauli Bedran (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Abascal Gallegos also finished second in the 100 breaststroke (57.66).

Bedran, one of five veterans on the team recognized as part of Senior Day, won both the 50 free (21.37) and the 100 free (46.93). He also anchored the second-place 200 medley relay (1:35.62) with Jimmy Lee (Windsor, Ont./Riverside), Matt Victor (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), and Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile).

Also recording first-place finishes were Victor in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.00) and Oskar Nordstrand (Stockholm, Sweden) in the 500 free (4:41.88).

Other notable swims came from Lee, who took second in the 200 IM (1:58.52) and made a “B” cut with a third-place time of 1:53.99 in the 200 back; Shields, who posted third-place finishes in the 50 free (22.19), 100 free (47.96) and 100 fly (52.55); Laschuk, who came in third in both the 200 breaststroke (2:14.78) and 200 fly (1:57.94); and Hesche, the runner-up in the 100 back (52.60).

In diving, Cayce Bolt (Sterling Heights, Mich./Warren Mott) won both the one-meter (284.0) and three-meter competitions (285.80). Mike Elliott (Washington, Mich./Romeo) came in third on both boards (257.40, 264.40).

In their final dual meet of the season, the Warriors will face Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 6:00 p.m. in Ypsilanti.
