Warriors Drop Game Two, 2-1, To Catamounts

WSU and UVM combine for 21 penalties

DETROIT - The Wayne State women's hockey team (6-9-3) came out of a penalty-laden game Saturday afternoon on the losing end, 2-1, wrapping up a weekend series with Vermont (6-14-1) at the City Sports Center.

Both the Warriors and Catamounts finished 1-for-9 on power plays in a contest which saw a combined 21 penalties called.

Vermont scored in each of the first two periods and, though a power-play goal early in the third by Chelsea Burnett (Ridgeway, Ont./Stoney Creek Sabres) cut the deficit in half, Wayne State was unable to close the gap.

Vermont snapped its eight-game losing streak and earned its first victory (1-7-2) all-time against WSU.

Chelsea Rapin put the Catamounts on the board on a power play at 8:10 of the opening period, punching in a rebound after Lindsey Park (Thornhill, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros) stopped shots from both Hannah Westbrook and Celeste Doucet.

Wayne State spent much of the second period on the penalty kill, as 12 of UVM's 15 shots in the period were with a skater advantage. After successfully stymieing five Vermont power-play chances, WSU surrendered an even-strength goal by Erin Wente from the left corner at the 17:07 mark.

Taking a pass from Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs), Burnett's long-distance shot sailed in just under the crossbar to make it a 2-1 game 56 seconds into the third.

The Warriors had three more power-play chances in the third period, but were unable to capitalize. UVM goaltender Kristen Olychuck (6-13-1) totaled 10 of her 28 saves in the final 20 minutes.

Park (3-6-1) finished with 24 saves, including 14 in the primarily short-handed second period.

Wayne State will host Robert Morris for a College Hockey America series next weekend, January 15-16, at the City Sports Center.
