HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Wayne State women's hockey team (4-4-0) scored three goals in the first period and put the brakes on a Colgate (2-4-0) comeback to defeat the Raiders,
5-3, on Saturday afternoon to complete the weekend sweep at Starr Rink.
Three Warriors –
Gina Buquet (Lafayette, La./Ohio Flames),
Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich./Little Caesars) and
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy) – finished with a goal and two assists each.
Julie Hebert (Chelmsford, Ont./Aurora Jr. Panthers) had a pair of assists,
Veronique Laramee-Paquette (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) scored a goal and added a helper, and
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) collected 40 saves.
Szandzik, who finished with seven points in the series, scored the game-winning power-play goal with 3:50 remaining in regulation after the Raiders tied it up at 3-3. She later assisted on
Julie Ingratta's (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy) power-play goal to seal the sweep.
Wayne State again tallied three power-play goals, including the first goal of the game by Baldin at 8:04 in the opening period.
Laramee-Paquette and Buquet scored two minutes apart in the latter stages of the period, and the Warriors went into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
The Raiders' rally began when Taylor Volpe lit the lamp midway through the second period. Brittany Phillips made it a one-goal game at 10:43 in the third, and less than two minutes later Jenna Klynstra tied the score.
Brian made 19 of her 40 saves in the second period, and again held Colgate's power-play unit scoreless at 0-for-4. She earned her 24th career victory, putting her in a tie with Anna VanderMarliere (2000-04) for second place all-time at WSU.
Wayne State is idle for the next two weeks before opening conference play Nov. 12-13 at Robert Morris.
