ASHLAND, Ohio - In a pivotal match between two teams battling for a postseason berth, the Wayne State University volleyball team (11-11, 9-6 GLIAC) earned a
3-1 victory over South Division rival Ashland University (15-9, 8-7 GLIAC) on Thursday night.
The Warriors and Eagles each took a set before WSU nabbed two in a row for its first win at Kates Gymnasium since Nov. 2, 2001.
Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) totaled a career-high 18 kills as part of her fourth double-double of the season. She contributed 11 digs and hit .429 with a pair of blocks.
Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) finished with 16 kills and five blocks, while
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) and
Amanda Wetherill (Forest, Ohio/Riverdale) collected nine kills each. Kent narrowly missed a double-double with 12 digs.
No more than two points separated the teams in the opening set until a four-point run produced a 19-16 lead for Wayne State. The Warriors held their lead for the duration of the set, a 25-21 result.
Ashland took a 15-12 advantage on a 6-0 run in the second and went on to win 25-19 to tie it up.
MacDonald amassed seven kills and five digs in the third set as WSU took a 2-1 overall lead with a 25-18 triumph. The Warriors sealed the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth.
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) racked up 50 assists with three kills and four digs.
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) had a team-high 15 digs.
Ashland's Brittany Snider, who came in as the top hitter in Division II, was limited to eight kills and a -.079 hitting percentage.
Wayne State will play its final road match of the regular season Saturday at Lake Erie.
