SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-6, 7-4 GLIAC) opened its five-match road trip with a
3-1 win at Lake Superior State University (4-10, 2-8 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon.
After dropping the first set 25-14, the Warriors took the next three (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) to defeat the Lakers for the sixth time in their last seven meetings.
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) finished with 11 kills, a .350 hitting percentage and seven blocks.
Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) was also effective up front with 13 kills.
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) totaled 10 kills and a pair of service aces, and
Amanda Wetherill (Forest, Ohio/Riverdale) collected eight kills and posted a team-best .389 hitting percentage.
The Lakers out-hit the Warriors, .346 to -.026, in the opening set. However, LSSU posted just a .100 hitting percentage over the remaining three sets.
Coming out of a WSU timeout down 16-13, a kill by Sak ended a four-point LSSU run and sparked a 7-2 run for the Warriors. Wayne State did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set and tied the match.
The Warriors led by as many as nine points in the third, and in the fourth Wayne State won seven straight points to take a 19-12 lead on its way to the overall match victory.
In her first collegiate start, freshman
Jessica DeLeeuw (Harrison Twp., Mich./L'Anse Creuse) racked up 41 assists and five digs.
Wayne State will travel to Northwood for a 4:00 match Saturday afternoon.
