MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (2-2-0) took the fourth-ranked University of Minnesota (3-0-0) to the limit in a narrow
1-0 setback Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.
While shots on goal favored the Golden Gophers, 40-22, only a first-period goal by Amanda Kessel separated the two teams in the end.
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) totaled 39 saves, including 17 in the opening 20 minutes.
Brian's counterpart, Noora Raty, made 22 saves for her ninth career shutout. The Gophers have yet to allow a goal in three regular season games.
Leading the WSU offensive attack were
Lauren Ragen (Grosse Ile, Mich./Connecticut Polar Bears) and
Julie Hebert (Chelmsford, Ont./Aurora Jr. Panthers) who finished with four shots apiece.
Wayne State's eight-game road trip continues next weekend with a series at Boston University.
