MIDLAND, Mich. - The Wayne State volleyball team (9-7, 7-5 GLIAC) had a two-set lead vanish in a
3-2 setback at Northwood (7-8, 5-6 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Bennett Center.
Despite 17 kills and nine blocks in the match from
Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino), the Warriors were unable to put it away in the third set and subsequently dropped the next two to lose a five-set result to the Timberwolves for the first time since 1995.
Wayne State led for the duration of the first set, and in the second recovered from a 16-8 deficit to win 25-20 and take a two set lead.
After the Timberwolves narrowed their deficit with a 25-21 win in the third, they nabbed the fourth 25-17 and forced a fifth set.
The Warriors took a 7-3 lead in the final set until a 12-1 run for Northwood ended the match.
Madie Kent (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) totaled 11 kills, five digs and a pair of blocks.
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) and
Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) finished with 24 and 17 digs, respectively, while
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) racked up 43 assists, eight digs and six blocks.
Wayne State will play in the third annual GLIAC/GLVC Crossover next weekend in Aurora, Ill. Seeding for the tournament will be determined Monday morning.
