Baldin's Hat Trick Propels WSU To 4-1 Win

Warriors split road series with Colonials

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior forward Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) earned her first career hat trick as the Wayne State University women's hockey team (5-5-0, 1-1-0 CHA) defeated Robert Morris University (2-9-0, 1-2-0 CHA) on Saturday afternoon, 4-1, to split the weekend series.

Baldin scored the game-winning goal early in the second period and added two tallies in the third for the first hat trick by a Warrior since Melissa Boal lit the lamp four times against RMU on Jan. 17, 2009.

Julie Hebert (Chelmsford, Ont./Aurora Jr. Panthers) scored the first goal of the game, and Veronique Laramee-Paquette (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) assisted on both third-period markers for her second multiple-point game of the year.

Shots on goal slightly favored Wayne State, 23-22. Delayne Brian's (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) only blemish on a 21-save performance was a second period tally by Cobina Delaney.

On Wayne State's third power-play of the opening period, Hebert scored her second goal of the campaign with assists from Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy) and Lauren Ragen (Grosse Ile, Mich./Connecticut Polar Bears) at the 16:51 mark.

Baldin made it a 2-0 game at 2:03 of the second, but Delaney's goal came just 12 seconds later. The Warriors held their 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

At 8:04 of the third period, Baldin scored her second of the game from Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich./Little Caesars) and Laramee-Paquette. Baldin's hat trick came on an empty-netter as time expired.

Brian, who took sole possession of second place all-time at WSU with her 25th career victory, made nine of her 21 saves in the final 20 minutes, and held RMU to 0-for-4 on power-plays in the game.

Wayne State will return to Detroit to play two straight home series, beginning with Skate for the Cure Weekend, Nov. 19-20 against Mercyhurst.

NOTES
Szandzik has nine points during her current four-game scoring streak … Brian surpassed Anna VanderMarliere (2000-04) on the all-time wins list at WSU … Baldin leads the team with seven goals, while Ingratta's 11 points are a squad-high … Wayne State ended its eight-game road trip with a 4-4-0 record.
