DETROIT - Junior goaltender
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) earned her seventh career shutout as the Wayne State University women's hockey team (6-7-0) defeated Minnesota State University (6-8-1),
6-0, on Friday night at the City Sports Center.
Brian steered aside all 31 shots she faced, including 15 in the third period, for her third shutout of the season. She also held the Mavericks scoreless on four power plays.
Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) and
Julie Hebert (Chelmsford, Ont./Aurora Jr. Panthers) finished with a goal and two assists each as the Warriors recorded their most lopsided victory since a 7-0 win at Vermont on Nov. 8, 2008.
All of the scoring was confined to the first two periods.
Cari Coen's (Manhattan Beach, Calif./L.A. Selects) first collegiate goal, scored on a power-play from
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy) and Hebert, put WSU ahead 1-0 at 11:30 of the opening period.
With just over three minutes remaining until intermission,
Veronique Laramee-Paquette (Mont-Tremblant, Que./Les Cheminots) created a turnover in the MSU zone and fired it in from the right wing for her fourth goal of the year at 16:46.
Moments later,
Ciara Lee (Toronto, Ont./Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins) and
Adrianna Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Belle Tire) found Baldin streaking into the neutral zone, as Baldin carried the puck in and split two defensemen to score her eighth of the season at the 18:48 mark.
A shot from the high slot by Pfeffer produced her second goal of the campaign with helpers from Baldin and Laramee-Paquette and was one of only two shots faced by Danielle Butters, who briefly relieved starter Alli Altmann at the beginning of the second period. Altmann, who had 15 saves in the game, returned to her position after Pfeffer's goal made it 4-0 at 3:30.
Ingratta's seventh of the year came as she tucked the puck in on the short side at 5:48, with assists from Baldin and Hebert.
Hebert's third goal of the season from
Jaclyn Stapleton (Westbank, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence) and Szandzik capped off the scoring with 36 seconds remaining in the second period.
Despite a 15-5 advantage in shots for the Mavericks in the third period, they were unable to solve Brian and lost to the Warriors for just the third time in 13 meetings.
Wayne State and Minnesota State will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. WSU will continue to sponsor its toy drive, offering free admission in exchange for a new toy to donate to the DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan.
