Brian ties season-high with 40 saves

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Wayne State University women's hockey team (7-11-0) ended 2010 with a 4-2 loss at Ohio State University (10-8-2) on New Year's Eve at the OSU Ice Rink.

The Buckeyes scored three times in the final period to hand the Warriors their fourth straight setback despite 40 saves, tying a season-high, by WSU goaltender Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds).

Brian also recorded her second career assist, becoming the first goaltender in WSU history to have more than one, as the Warriors tried to mount a comeback in the third period.

Micheline Frappier (Val Caron, Ont./Sudbury Lady Wolves) erased a one-goal deficit at 3:50 of the second period with her first goal of the season. On a WSU power-play, Frappier followed up on a rebound off a blocked shot by Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont./North American Hockey Academy), who earned an assist along with Cari Coen (Manhattan Beach, Calif./L.A. Selects).

Ohio State regained the lead at 1:09 of the third on Paige Semenza's goal. Semenza assisted on Tina Hollowell's game-winner less than two minutes later as Hollowell fired one in from the right wing past Brian.

On a 5-on-3 power-play, Gina Buquet (Lafayette, La./Ohio Flames) gave the Warriors life with her fifth goal of the year from Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich./Little Caesars) and Brian at the 6:27 mark.

Brian was pulled for an extra attacker with 38 seconds remaining, but Hokey Langan's empty-net goal at 19:56 sealed the win for the Buckeyes.

Shots on goal favored OSU, 44-11, but Brian and the Warriors held the Buckeyes scoreless on their six power-play chances and 0-for-11 for the series.

Wayne State will play six home games in January, beginning with a CHA series Jan. 14-15 against Niagara.
