DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's hockey team skated to a
2-2 tie with Niagara University on Friday night at the City Sports Center.
The four-point gap in the standings between the fourth-place Warriors and third-place Purple Eagles remained so following the deadlock, as Wayne State had a 2-0 lead disappear in the second period Friday.
While Wayne State was able to snap a four-game losing skid, the team has not tasted victory since a 3-2 win over Robert Morris on Jan. 16.
Adrianna Pfeffer (Farmington Hills, Mich./Belle Tire) made it a 1-0 game late in the first, and
Alyssa Baldin's (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) power-play tally at 12:25 of the second doubled WSU's lead. Niagara responded with two goals over the next 4:19, and neither side could break the tie in the third period or overtime.
Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) was solid between the pipes once again for WSU, stopping 31 shots including three in the extra period as the Warriors also had to kill a penalty. Niagara was 0-for-4 on power plays in the game.
Friday was Wayne State's first overtime contest since a 2-1 loss at Niagara on Dec. 12. The Warriors are 7-2-10 in their last 19 overtime games.
Several players snapped scoring droughts on Friday, including Pfeffer as, with less than a minute to go in the opening period, she took a long pass from
Gina Buquet (Lafayette, La./Ohio Flames) and made a move from the left side on NU goaltender Jenni Bauer to score her second of the year at 19:04.
Buquet's assist was her first point in five games, while Pfeffer's goal was her first since Oct. 23 at Colgate.
Baldin's power-play tally, her seventh goal of the season, came on a one-timer from a pass across the zone by
Julie Hebert (Chelmsford, Ont./Aurora Jr. Panthers), earning her first helper since Jan. 8 against Vermont.
Lauren Ragen (Grosse Ile, Mich./Connecticut Polar Bears) started the scoring play, collecting her seventh assist of the year.
Less than a minute later, a short wrist shot from the left side by Frances McPhail lit the lamp for Niagara, making it a 2-1 game.
As the 17-minute mark of the second period approached, Daniela Dal Colle from the slot redirected a pass by Autumn Stuntz past Brian for her third tally of the year, evening the score at 2-2.
Shots on goal slightly favored WSU in the third period, 11-10, but overall the edge went to Niagara, 33-24. Bauer totaled 22 saves for the Purple Eagles.
Senior Day will highlight Saturday afternoon's rematch between Wayne State and Niagara beginning at 2:00 p.m.
