Men’s Tennis Wins Third Straight With 8-1 Victory Over Bellarmine

Indianapolis, Ind.- The surging Wayne State men's tennis team continued its winning ways on Saturday with an 8-1 victory against Bellarmine. In the ITA Midwest Regional Preseason Poll, WSU was ranked No. 9 while the Knights were ranked No. 7. WSU record is now 3-1.

Sophomore Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France), freshman Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and freshman Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) all enjoyed a multi-win day by earning victories in both their doubles and singles matches.

As has been the case throughout its current winning streak, Wayne State once again found success in its doubles matches on Saturday, taking all three points. So far this season, the Warriors are 9-3 in doubles matches.

In their No. 1 doubles match, Moulin and Britton Steele (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) got a hard-fought 9-8 win over Nate Matthews and Jacob Knagenhjelm after taking the tie-breaker 11-9.

In slightly less dramatic fashion, the No. 2 and No. 3 WSU doubles pairings of junior Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) / Ducret and Gamarra / senior Kevin Turnbull (Shelby Twp., Mich./Warren De La Salle) earned 8-4 and 8-2 wins respectively.

Wayne State's singles performance was highlighted by a pair of comeback wins

Moulin achieved his seventh singles win since September by defeating Nate Matthews 6-3, 6-4. After Steele suffered a 6-4, 7-6 (12-10) loss, Ducret picked up another point for WSU with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Knagenhjelm in the third singles flight.

Gamarra and senior Roberto Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico/Preparaforia del Estado de Comitan) both lost their first sets before bouncing back to win their No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 and 6-7 (7-4), 6-1, 6-0 respectively.

Freshman Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) continued his solid play in his inaugural season at WSU with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Carols Antonioli.

Wayne State will be back in action next Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. against Toledo.
