Baldin ties career-high 18 points with power-play goal

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - In a preview of this Thursday's College Hockey America Tournament quarterfinal game, the Wayne State University women's hockey team (8-17-4, 4-10-1 CHA) lost a 2-1 decision to Robert Morris University (10-22-1, 3-11-1 CHA) on Friday night in the penultimate game of the 2009-10 regular season.

Alyssa Baldin's (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) power-play goal, her career-high tying 18th point of the season, in the third period cut in half a deficit created by two Sara O'Malley goals in the second.

Wayne State pulled goaltender Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds) for an extra attacker in the final 1:11 but could not tie the score. Brian finished with 26 saves in the loss, which extends WSU's winless streak to nine games.

Friday was just the Warriors' third loss all-time to the Colonials, but the second road loss on the road dating back to last February's 1-0 RMU victory.

Following the 18th scoreless first period of the season for Wayne State, O'Malley created a turnover in the neutral zone as the midway point of the period approached. She dropped the puck back to Maria Stoa and darted across the ice to position herself to the right of Brian for the one-timer from Stoa at 8:07.

With under three minutes left in the period, as the Colonials briefly skated with an extra player on a delayed penalty, O'Malley fired a shot from the right faceoff circle inside the far post over Brian's blocker.

Early in a WSU power-play, one of eight chances in the game, Jill Szandzik (Warren, Mich./Little Caesars) knocked the puck off the right-side boards to Julie Hebert (Chelmsford, Ont./Aurora Jr. Panthers), who shot in on Daneca Butterfield. The rebound went to Baldin, who put it away from the left side for her eighth goal of the year.

Shots on goal favored the Colonials, 28-24. Butterfield finished with 23 saves for her eighth win of the season.

Wayne State and Robert Morris will close out the regular season Saturday at 7:05 p.m. ET. They will meet again in Detroit on Thursday at the City Sports Center in the CHA quarterfinal at 3:00 p.m. ET.
