Sotball Edges Minnesota-Duluth, 1-0, In Eight Innings

WSU scores lone run on a passed ball.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The No. 4-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (14-3 overall) recorded a 1-0 victory over Minnesota-Duluth (2-2 overall) in eight innings on Sunday as part of the Rebel Spring Games.

In a true pitchers duel, WSU senior hurler Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) and Bulldog pitcher Kristin Danielson matched zero-for-zero through seven innings.

UMD had two base runners in the first (a single and a WSU error) but Hanes left them stranded at second and third.  After retiring six consecutive batters, the Bulldogs' Whitney Olson was hit by a pitch with one out in the third and advanced to second on a single by Michaela Goris.  Both runners moved up a base on a ground out, but Hanes recorded the final out of the frame.

Danielson retired the first eight Warrior hitters until sophomore Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) was hit by a pitch in the third.

Coley Gale had a leadoff walk in the fourth but only advanced to second.  After Gale's free pass, Hanes set down the next six Bulldog batters before a leadoff single in the seventh, but Whitney Strantz did not advance past first.

WSU's second base runner was also via a hit by pitch as freshman Bailey Reid (Guelph, Ont. / Ross Collegiate V.I.) reached with two outs in the fifth.

Wayne State's best scoring chance of regulation came in the seventh as sophomore third baseman Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) had a leadoff single, WSU's lone hit of the contest.  Pinch-runner Kassie Snyder (Marine City, Mich.) advanced to second on pinch-hitter Makelle Barski's (Trenton, Mich.) sacrifice bunt, but the next two WSU batters were retired.

In the top of the eighth using the international tie-breaker, Goris was placed on second.  She advanced to third on a ground out but was thrown out at the plate on Danielson's fielder's choice.  Hanes induced Gale into a ground out to end the inning.

Hanes struck out five and walked one to improve to 10-1.  Danielson did not record a walk or a strikeout in the contest but suffers the loss on the unearned run.

Wayne State will play two games on Monday -- at 1 p.m. vs. Dowling College and at 5 p.m. against the University of New Haven.
In the bottom of the eighth, senior Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) was placed on second.  Reid's sacrifice bunt advanced LeClair to third where she scored on a passed ball for the game's lone run.
