Warriors End Season With 3-1 Loss To RMU

Baldin scores lone Warrior goal in first period

DETROIT - The 2009-10 season came to an end for the Wayne State University women's hockey team (9-18-4) on Thursday afternoon, as the Warriors lost a 3-1 decision to Robert Morris University (11-23-1) in the quarterfinal game of the College Hockey America Tournament at the City Sports Center.

Alyssa Baldin (Mississauga, Ont./Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) finished the season with a point in seven of the final eight games, scoring WSU's lone goal at 8:05 of the first period.

All of the scoring was confined to the first 17:14 of the game. Jennifer Kindret tallied the game-winner at 12:59, and Dayna Newsom added an insurance tally as RMU avenged losses to WSU in each of the last two CHA Tournaments.

The Colonials advanced to Friday's semifinals, when they will take on top-ranked Mercyhurst at 4:00 p.m.

Brianna Delaney gave RMU a 1-0 lead at 2:20 with her 14th goal of the season, shooting from the high slot on the right side past WSU starting goalie Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Man./Notre Dame Hounds). Maria Stoa assisted on the play.

Baldin tied it up with her ninth of the year from Katrina Protopapas (Chatham, Ont./Bluewater Hawks) and Christine Jefferson (Nepean, Ont./NCCP Jr. Raiders). Jefferson and Protopapas worked the puck along the left wing boards to Baldin, who skated in and fired from the faceoff circle.

Nearly five minutes later, Kindret put in a rebound off a shot from Newsom and, after Newsom made it a 3-1 game, Brian was replaced by Lindsey Park (Thornhill, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros) who made 13 saves over the next 42:46.

The Colonials doubled the Warriors' shot total, 12-6, in the first period. Shots also favored RMU, 13-9, over the subsequent scoreless two periods.

Daneca Butterfield totaled 14 saves for her eighth win of the season.

Syracuse and Niagara will meet in the second semifinal game at 7:00 following the MC-RMU matchup. The championship game is scheduled for 5:00 on Saturday.
