Wayne State Claims Sweep Over SVSU With 8-3 Win

DETROIT – The Wayne State University baseball team (19-12, 13-3 GLIAC) recorded an 8-3 win over Saginaw Valley State (11-14, 8-8 GLIAC) in game two of Saturday's doubleheader to complete the sweep after winning game one.

Tyler Loehr struck out four Cardinals and gave up just two runs, only one of which was earned, in five innings. Loehr is now 4-1 this season with a 3.72 ERA.

Alex Trojan and Ryan LaPensee each produced three hits while Paul LaMantia drove in a game-high three runs off of two hits. LaPensee and John Skaggs, who was 2-for-4, both had two-RBI games for WSU as well.

Phil Swanson went 2-for-3, drew a walk and scored two runs from the leadoff spot Caleb Dalman and Michael Wiseman accounted for the remaining two hits.

After doing all of its damage in just two innings in game one, the Warriors scored runs in four different innings in the second game on Saturday.

Loehr held Saginaw Valley scoreless through the first two innings while the Warrior offense was able to post three runs through the first two frames thanks to a two-out RBI single in the first inning by LaMantia that scored LaPensee and runs in the second by Trojan and Skaggs. Trojan led off the second inning with a stand-up triple and scored off of Skaggs' single while Skaggs would later cross home plate on a passed ball.

The Cardinals would touch Loehr for a run in the third inning to make it a 3-1 game, but WSU was able to push its lead to 5-1 after a two-run fourth inning that saw LaPensee single to right to drive in Dalman and Swanson.

With the score 5-2, Wayne State turned to pitcher Matt Rustulka in the sixth inning. He would respond by shutting Saginaw Valley down by way of three fly outs.

WSU scored three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with LaMantia driving in two and Skaggs bringing home another. Despite giving up three hits and one run, Rustulka was able to pitch out of trouble to ensure the Warrior win in the seventh.

Wayne State and Saginaw Valley will close out the weekend with a nine-inning game on Sunday at the WSU baseball field. The first pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
