Wayne State Rallies On Senior Day To Defeat SVSU 7-2

DETROIT – The Wayne State University baseball team (20-12, 14-3 GLIAC) came back from a one-run deficit by scoring six runs in the eighth inning on Sunday to defeat Saginaw Valley State (11-15, 8-9 GLIAC) 7-2. The win gave the Warriors a weekend sweep of the Cardinals and was their 10th victory in their last 11 games.

WSU also held the Senior Day festivities on Sunday as nine Warriors and their families were honored prior to the game.

Brady Cooper kept Saginaw Valley in check as the senior picked up the complete-game win. In his nine-innings of work, Cooper, who improved his overall record to 3-3, fanned four Cardinals on the day and allowed just two hits after the third inning.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the eighth inning, Wayne State mounted its rally when Phil Swanson hit a one-out double to left center. After Andrew Ciennik was hit by a pitch, Ryan LaPensee hit what appeared to be a routine grounder to first base. However, the fielder misplayed the ball and LaPensee was able to beat the eventual throw to the bag to load the bases for clean-up hitter Paul LaMantia.

LaMantia then proceeded to single to right field to drive in Swanson and Ciennik. The Cardinals then went to their bullpen. Not wanting to face the dangerous Michael Wiseman, who is leading WSU with 38 RBI this year, SVSU intentionally walked the catcher to get to Alex Trojan. With the bases loaded, Trojan quickly made the decision a regrettable one by belting a towering grand slam that put the Warriors up 7-2. The shot was Trojan's first home run of the season and second of his career.

Cooper gave up a hit with one out in the ninth inning, but forced the next batter to ground into a fielder's choice with centerfielder Kyle Vesey collecting the final fly out of the game by the next Cardinal batter to ensure the win.

Swanson, who was 3-for-5 on the day, drove in WSU's other RBI in the fifth inning. John Skaggs joined Swanson and LaMantia with multi-hit days after a 2-for-4 performance.

Wayne State will take on Grand Valley State in a battle between the top two teams in the GLIAC in a doubleheader on Wednesday at the WSU Baseball Field. Game one will begin at 2:00 p.m.
