DETROIT -- The ninth-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (43-10 overall, 17-5 GLIAC) suffered a
2-1 setback to visiting Ferris State University (23-15 overall, 14-8 GLIAC) in the second game of a conference twinbill Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Complex.
Warrior starter
Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) went four scoreless striking out two and walking two while allowing two base hits.
WSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth as
Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) doubled to right center with one out and scored as
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) doubled on a 1-1 pitch. The Warriors had runners at second and third with one out after
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) reached on a dropped fly ball, but the next two batters were retired.
The Bulldogs scored both of their unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. Amanda Harrington walked on four pitches and advanced to second on a ground out. After a fly out, Makenzi Peterson perfectly placed a single just over the third base bag and with Harrington trying to score the throw beat her to the plate but the ball was dropped as she went around the catcher and had to come back and touch the plate. Peterson hustled to third on the play. Rhea Flores followed with an RBI single deep in the hole at short scoring Peterson with the eventual winning run.
After going 1-2-3 in the sixth,
Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) had an infield single on a 3-2 pitch to start the inning. A LeClair sacrifice bunt advanced her to third. Omelanchuk dropped a single into shallow center field moving Ryan to third, but FSU pitcher Kayle Stevenson recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Stevenson struck out five and did not walk a batter while allowing five hits and one earned run.
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) took the loss to fall to 35-5. She allowed three hits and two unearned runs in two innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
Omelanchuk was the lone Warrior with two hits in the contest.
Wayne State closes out the regular-season with road doubleheaders at Northwood (April 30) and Lake Superior (May 1) needing four wins to claim the GLIAC regular-season title outright. A 3-1 mark would tie the Warriors with Ashland for title at 20-6 in league play.
