DETROIT -- The fourth-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (26-7 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) won its fourth consecutive league contest with a
7-3 triumph over the Findlay Oilers (11-17 overall, 1-5 GLIAC) in the second game of Saturday's GLIAC twinbill at the WSU Softball Field.
WSU snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the third as second baseman
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) was hit by a 2-2 pitch from Carly Borders. Histed advanced to second on a ground out, stole third with two outs then scored on a wild pitch.
The Warriors increased their lead to 4-0 with a three-run fourth.
Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) singled up the middle on the first pitch of the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.).
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) walked for her team-leading 14th time and was replaced by pinch-runner
Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.).
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) singled between short and third scoring Ryan and
Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) followed with a single to right field loading the bases. Barski scored on Histed's fielder's choice with Foreman crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Findlay scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on a single, an RBI double, a single, back-to-back strikeouts and an RBI single before
Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) replaced WSU starter
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy). Hanes recorded the final out on a ground out back to the mound.
WSU made it 5-2 with a run in the top of the sixth. Foreman had a one-out double down the left field line and scored on a wind-aided double to right center by
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) in which the center fielder broke back but the wind blew the ball towards the infield.
The Oilers pulled within two at 5-3 on a single, ground out, wild pitch and a throwing error in the bottom of the sixth.
The Warrior offense responded with two runs on one hit in the top of the seventh.
Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) reached on an error and moved to third on a single by
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) and throwing error. Bantonscored WSU's sixth run on a squeeze bunt by LeClair, while Stanley scored when Omelanchuk's fly to right field was dropped.
The first two Findlay batters were retired in the bottom of the seventh, but Katie Ammons tripled down the right field line and the next two batters walked on a 3-2 pitches to load the bases. Hanes notched the final out on a foul out to LeClair.
Cain allowed two earned runs in 3.2 innings on five hits. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. Hanes (21-3) recorded the win in relief allowing one earned run in 3.1 innings. She struck out two and walked three.
Borders (0-3) allowed eight hits and seven runs (five earned) with one strikeout and two walks.
Stanley and Foreman each had two hits for WSU, while Ammons was the lone Oiler with a multiple-hit performance.
Wayne State visits Hillsdale for a conference twinbill on Tuesday before returning to Motown for a four-game weekend home stand. The Warriors entertain Ashland on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Tiffin on Sunday (noon).
