INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - In its final match of the University of Indianapolis Invitational, the Wayne State University volleyball team (2-2) lost a
3-1 result to 25th-ranked Truman State University (3-0) on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors battled the Bulldogs to a pair of close sets, with Truman taking the first (27-25) and Wayne State the second (25-22). Truman pulled away in the latter two sets, however, to seal the match victory (25-15, 25-13).
Katarzyna Sak (Warren, Mich./Cousino) once again led WSU in front with 12 kills and nine blocks.
Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) finished with a double-double, totaling 10 kills and 10 digs.
Facing set point at 24-21 in the opener, WSU fought back to tie it at 24-24, and later fended off another set point before Truman was able to win it for a 1-0 lead.
Sak and MacDonald combined for nine of WSU's 12 kills in the second set as the Warriors evened the score. Following a timeout in a 21-21 tie, Wayne State took four of the next five points.
While Wayne State led in the third set 7-4, Truman went on a seven-point run and led the rest of the way. The Bulldogs sealed the victory with a 12-point advantage in the fourth.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) had 12 digs to go with five kills and five blocks.
Lindsey Graciak (Westland, Mich./Livonia Churchill) had 15 digs.
Wayne State will open GLIAC play Tuesday night at Hillsdale.
UPDATE 9/4/2010 11:35 p.m. -- At the conclusion of the Invitational on Saturday night, Sak was one of six players selected to the All-Tournament Team. In four matches, Sak finished with 51 kills, averaging 3.64 per set, and 30 blocks for an average of 2.14 per set. Sak also had a .263 hitting percentage and contributed five service aces.
