FINDLAY, Ohio - In a battle between two teams fighting for a spot in next week's GLIAC Tournament, the Wayne State University volleyball team lost in
three sets at the University of Findlay on Tuesday night at Croy Gymnasium.
Findlay swept the match, albeit by narrow margins (25-23, 25-21, 32-30) to win its ninth straight match and snap a seven-match skid against Wayne State. The teams are now tied for third place in the South Division with two matches remaining.
Nicole Arends (Ravenna, Mich.) finished with eight kills and three blocks.
Morgan Dickerson (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) totaled a season-high nine kills, and
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont./Sandwich) had 11 kills and 10 digs for her 12th double-double of the year and her fourth in five matches.
Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.) hit .312 with seven kills, and
Cydney Biessel (Ruby, Mich./Yale) collected 32 assists.
The Warriors trailed by as many as 10 points in the opening set, but an eight-point run made the score 22-20 and forced Findlay into a timeout. WSU fended off two set points before the Oilers could finish it.
Set two was back-and-forth early on until Findlay pulled ahead 7-6 and never relinquished the lead. The final set was the first time WSU and its opponent both exceeded 30 points since 2007, the last year in which 30 points were required to win a set.
Wayne State will travel to the Upper Peninsula this weekend to face Northern Michigan on Friday and Michigan Tech on Saturday.
