Cochran finishes with historic 20-20 performance

RENSSELAER, Ind. - Despite a tremendous performance by Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill), the Wayne State University women's basketball team (5-3) lost a 90-82 result at St. Joseph's (5-3) on Saturday afternoon.

Cochran racked up 28 points and grabbed 23 rebounds, the most by a WSU player since Marie Doss amassed a school-record 26 rebounds against Northwood on Feb. 22, 1986.  Cochran also posted the 10th 20-plus rebound game in program history.

Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) also had a double-double, contributing 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors (44 percent) out-shot the Pumas (40 percent) overall from the field, but SJC was far more prolific from three-point range, finishing 8-for-26 compared to 1-for-7 for WSU.  The Pumas also doubled the Warriors in free throws made (30-15).

Wayne State jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 2:05 of the game, but SJC fought back to take a 23-22 edge with 4:51 left until halftime.

A layup by Tatiana Ortiz put the Pumas ahead, 31-30, with 20 seconds left in the half, and they held the lead for the duration of the game.  Wayne State cut a 12-point deficit down to five, 83-78, with 48 seconds left but could not entirely close the gap.

Two other Warriors scored in double-figures, as Stefani Munro (Harrison Twp., Mich./Mount Clemens) and Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Ortiz totaled 16 points, one of four Pumas in double figures.  Montrell Mills led SJC with 24 points and six rebounds.

Wayne State will host Ohio Dominican and Tiffin next Thursday and Saturday, respectively, at the Matthaei.
