Detroit, Mich. – The 38th-ranked Wayne State men's tennis team (1-0) won its 2011 opener over visiting Lewis University (0-1),
7-2, on Thursday night at the PeachTree Tennis Club in Clinton Township.
Ahead 2-1 after doubles play, the Warriors took five of the six matches in the singles portion.
Sophomore
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and freshman
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) won their No. 2 doubles match against Michael Wajnarowski and Jesse Hardacre, 8-3.
Sophomore
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) and freshman
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville) triumphed at the No. 3 spot, 8-6, over Lorenz Pestinger and Jonathan Teune.
In No. 1 doubles, junior
Matt Fisher (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) and freshman
Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont./Assumption College HS) lost 8-6 to Uno Lapimaa and Tonis Irdoja.
Gill overcame a first set defeat to win a marathon No. 3 singles match with Wojnarowski, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Gamarra bested Teune at the No. 5 spot, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 and sophomore
Jon Groszek (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) followed suit with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) end result in No. 6 singles.
FitzGerald won his No. 4 singles match in straight sets over Hardacre, 6-2. 7-5, while Attala fell in equal fashion to Lapimaa, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 1 singles.
Ducret rounded out the bunch with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Irdoja at No. 2 singles.
Wayne State travels to Indianapolis, Ind. for matches with the University of Indianapolis and Bellarmine University on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Check back to
