Indianapolis, Ind. – The 38th-ranked Wayne State men's tennis team (3-0) ended the weekend in Indianapolis with its second straight
8-1 victory, defeating Bellarmine University (1-2) on Sunday.
The Warriors swept five of the six singles matches in straight sets and took two of three from the Knights in doubles play.
Sophomore
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) moved to 6-0 on the year with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. Ducret beat Jacob Knagenjelm in the only tiebreaker match of the day, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8), and then teamed with freshman
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) to defeat Bryan Skaggs and Todd Atcher, 8-4.
Fitzgerald also went to 6-0 on the season, winning 6-1, 6-4 over Atcher in No. 3 singles.
At the No. 6 spot, freshman
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville) triumphed 6-0, 6-2 over Alex Chanley. Joseph followed suit with
Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) in No. 3 doubles, handing Paul Clark and Michael Heinekamp an 8-6 loss.
Freshman
Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont./Assumption College HS) came away with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Carlos Antonioli in No. 2 singles, moving his season singles record to 3-0.
Sophomore
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) took down Clark in No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Gamarra remains unbeaten on the season at 5-0.
Sophomore
Jon Groszek was equally successful in beating Heinekamp in No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Gill and junior
Matt Fisher (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) fell 8-3 to Knagenhjelm and Antonioli in No. 1 doubles.
Wayne State has two weeks off until it travels to Toledo University on Feb. 27.
