Toledo, Ohio – The 38th-ranked Wayne State men's tennis team (3-1) dropped its first match of the season,
6-1, at the University of Toledo (11-7) on Sunday.
The Warriors were swept in doubles play and fell in five of the six singles matches.
Sophomore
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) earned WSU's lone point, beating Bryant Dudzik in No. 5 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 10-2.
Sophomore
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and freshman
Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont./Assumption College HS) battled before being outdone in No. 1 doubles, 8-7 (11-9).
Ducret and Gill both went on to suffer similar heartbreaking blows in their singles matches. Ducret lost a marathon No. 1 singles bout with Nutthavit Likitkumchorn, 6-7 (7-9), 6-1, 10-3, while Gill took Mircea Dimofte to tiebreakers in each set but fell, 7-6 (3-7), 7-6 (2-7).
At the No. 6 spot, freshman
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville) was defeated by Ben Brocker, 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman
Alec Attala (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) and freshman
Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) suffered setbacks at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Attala lost 6-1, 6-2, while Fitzgerald was bested 6-0, 6-2.
Joseph and FitzGerald teamed up in No. 2 doubles and were beat 8-2.
Matt Fisher (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) and
Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) were defeated in No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
