Softball Scores Final Three Runs For 3-1 Triumph

Allen delivers two-run tie-breaking single in seventh.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team won its second consecutive game with a 3-1 victory over Minnesota-Duluth Sunday afternoon in action at the Rebel Spring Games.

The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the bottom of the first on a walk, a single, and two ground outs sandwiched around a walk.

WSU had a golden chance to knot the game in the top of the second as sophomore catcher Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) had a leadoff double and sophomore center fielder Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) followed with a bunt single.  A strikeout and a line-out double play ended the frame.

The Warriors were able to tie the contest in the top of the sixth as junior right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) was hit by a pitch leading off the inning.  After a sacrifice bunt by junior Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) advanced Allen to second and a ground out, Omelanchuk delivered her second double of the game scoring Allen.

In the top of the seventh, freshman second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on freshman left fielder Logan White's (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) bunt single.  Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica).  Following a strikeout, Allen's hit to left center landed between the shortstop and left fielder plating both runners.

WSU freshman pitcher Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity) retired three of the four UMD batters in the bottom of the seventh to even her record at 2-2.  McLaughlin struck out two and walked two while allowing one earned run on five hits.

Megan Mullen (1-4) went the distance for the Bulldogs.  She struck out seven and did not walk a batter while giving up three runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Omelanchuk was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit contest.  White extended her hitting streak to four games with her bunt single in the seventh.
