WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Wayne State baseball team (8-4) wrapped up its participation in the RussMatt Invitational with wins over Kentucky Wesleyan (3-3) and Minnesota-Crookston (0-8) on Wednesday.
The Warriors defeated the Panthers, 8-2, in the morning and routed the Golden Eagles, 19-5, in the afternoon.
Wayne State will return to Detroit before heading to the University of Findlay next weekend, March 26-27, to open GLIAC play with a four-game series against the Oilers.
GAME ONE: Wayne State 8, Kentucky Wesleyan 2
#C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.) had an extremely productive day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with four doubles, an RBI and three runs scored.
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland), who totaled three RBI, and
Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) had two hits apiece.
Wayne State put two runs on the board in the second inning on an RBI single by
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) and an RBI double by
Bobby Thomas (Northville, Mich.). Wiseman drove in a run with a base hit in the fifth, making it a 3-0 game.
Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) took a shutout into the sixth inning when the Panthers scored twice off of two walks, a single and an error. Wedesky improved to 3-0 on the year, allowing one earned run on five hits. He walked three and struck out four.
The Warriors scored four times in the seventh on an RBI double by Maszal, an RBI single by Wiseman and sacrifice flies from
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.). Maszal scored another run in the ninth.
Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) worked 2.2 scoreless innings in relief of Wedesky, and
Corey Post (Coldwater, Mich.) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a strikeout.
GAME TWO: Wayne State 19, Minnesota-Crookston 5
Propelled by a 10-run second inning in which they sent 14 hitters to the plate, the Warriors had a 16-0 lead after three innings.
The lead increased to 19-0 before UMC put two runs on the board in the sixth. The Golden Eagles tacked on three more in the ninth.
A total of 22 Warriors played in the game including six pitchers.
Justin Sylvester (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) made his first collegiate start and did not allow a run or hit in 3.2 innings. He walked one and struck out three.
Maszal, who has reached base in all 12 games this season, went 2-for-2 with a double, a triple, a walk, three runs scored and three RBI. Six of Maszal's seven hits in the two games were for extra bases.
#J.J. Ciennik# (Waterford, Mich./Mott) and
Chris Gebara (Troy, Mich.) each had three hits and combined for five RBI and three runs. Wiseman had two hits with two RBI and he scored three times.
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) drove in three runs, and Guenther had a pair of RBI as well.
