DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (12-10 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) finally held its home opener on Sunday after postponing both the Friday twinbill vs. Saginaw Valley (to March 29) and Saturday's doubleheader vs. Northwood (to April 13). WSU didn't disappoint the home crowd with back-to-back wins over Lake Superior (3-10 overall, 0-6 GLIAC),
12-1 (5 innings) and
6-3.
The Warriors started strong in game one with a four-run first inning. Junior third baseman
Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) had a one-out double to right center, and junior first baseman
Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) followed with a two-run blast to left center on a 3-1 offering. After a single by sophomore catcher
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.), sophomore center fielder
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) clubbed a two-run home run to left center on the first pitch.
The Lakers scored once in the top of the second, but WSU answered in the bottom of the frame as junior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) had a leadoff double to left field. Histed advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a two-out double down the left field line by Ryan to make it 5-1.
Wayne State scored four runs in the bottom of the third chasing LSSU starter Felicia Gingrich (1-2). Senior designated player
Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) started the frame by ling a 1-2 pitch off the Laker third baseman. Freshman second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) fouled off two two-strike pitches and eventually worked a walk advancing pinch-runner
Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) to second. Histed had a one-out single to load the bases, and junior right fielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) had an RBI single through the right side. Stanley laced a 2-0 pitch into right center for a two-run double, and after Emily Markey took over in the circle, Ryan smacked a 1-0 offering into left field plating Allen.
WSU completed the contest with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and shutting out the Lakers in the top of the fifth.
Fulton had a one-out single in the fourth and reached second on an infield single by freshman left fielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.). Histed's grounder up the middle was misplayed by the LSSU hurler to load the bases. Allen followed with a two-run single up the middle making it 11-1. Histed scored unearned on Stanley's groundout.
Warrior junior pitcher
Sam Cain () improved to 5-7 by limiting Lake Superior to one earned run on five hits in five innings. She struck out two and walked two.
Gingrich surrendered nine earned runs on 11 hits in 2 1/3 innings with one strikeout and two walks. Markey gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings.
The top three in WSU's lineup combined to go 7-for-12 with three runs scored and 10 RBI. Allen and Stanley each went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Ryan had three hits and four RBI. Fulton and Histed each had two hits as all nine Wayne State starters had at least one hit.
Jillian Willette went 2-for-2 for LSSU.
Wayne State clobbered four home runs in game two to back the four-hit pitching of freshman
Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity) in the 6-3 win.
Allen drilled the second pitch of the game over the left field fence giving the Warriors an early 1-0 lead. It was her 24th career home run eclipsing the mark of 23 set by Amanda Jennings (1996-99).
WSU added four runs in the third as White beat out an infield hit to start the frame. Allen smacked an 0-1 offering over the left centerfield fence to make it 3-0. Ryan reached base on a two-out error, and Omelanchuk laced a 2-0 pitch into the trees in left center field.
LSSU scored twice in the fourth to make it 5-2. Heather Cuthrell hit the Lakers' first home run of the season with one out and Gingrich on base. Lake Superior tallied an unearned run in the fifth, which WSU answered in the top of the sixth as Omelanchuk hit an 0-2 offering leading off the inning over the left field fence.
McLaughlin (7-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Nicole Stein (0-2) started in the circle for LSSU and allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits in 2 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Willette hurled the final 4.1 innings giving up one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
WSU's four home runs (two each by Allen and Omelanchuk) is the second most in one game in the last 10 seasons (surpassed only by the six at Lake Superior on April 23, 2007 in a 13-10 Warrior victory).
Allen and Omelanchuk each had three RBI in game two.
Wayne State continues GLIAC play with a home doubleheader on Tuesday, March 29 starting at 3:30 pm against Saginaw Valley (re-scheduled from March 25).
