Clinton Twp., Mich. – With the 37th-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (12-4) and Aquinas College (15-3) deadlocked at four apiece in the match, the No. 2 doubles tandem of
Thomas Ducret (Paris, France) and
Matt Fisher (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) outdueled Kyle Masteller and Michael Sendor, 9-7, earning the Warriors a thrilling
5-4 victory on Wednesday at PeachTree Tennis Club.
Oscar Gamarra (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier) and
Alec Attala (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) triumphed 8-4 in their No. 3 doubles match with Travis Wolf and John Telfer.
Each team earned three wins apiece in singles competition.
Aman Gill (Windsor, Ont./Assumption College HS) accomplished a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nik Artaev in the No. 2 spot, while Gamarra battled to a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Masteller in the No. 3 position. The win moved Gamarra's season record in singles play to 11-4.
Lastly,
Eric Szydlowski (Canton, Mich./Canton) scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Michael Sendor in No. 6 singles.
In other singles matches, Ducret suffered a setback in a hard-fought No. 1 singles bout with Aaron Hendrick, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville) fell in his No. 4 singles match with Wolf, 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-3, while Attala was bested by Telfer in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
Gill and Joseph conceded an 8-3 loss to Hendrick and Artaev in No. 1 doubles, 8-3.
WSU continues GLIAC play on Sunday when it hosts Grand Valley at PeachTree Tennis Club at 10:30 a.m.
