BOX SCORES: GAME 1 | GAME 2
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - In yet another set of low-scoring games, the Wayne State University baseball team (18-10, 10-6 GLIAC) was swept at Saginaw Valley State University (13-15, 8-8 GLIAC) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Warriors dropped a 2-0 decision in the opener and lost a wild 10-inning game, 3-2. Eric Hummel tossed a two-hitter for SVSU in the first game, while WSU and SVSU combined to use 11 pitchers and leave 28 men on base in the finale.
WSU is 3-6 in one-run games in which the winning team scores three runs or less. Wednesday was WSU's fourth 3-2 loss in the last four days, and the second decided in 10 innings.
Wayne State will open a six-game homestand this weekend against Ohio Dominican (12-15, 9-7 GLIAC) in what will be a battle between the second and third place teams in the conference.
GAME ONE: SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 2, WAYNE STATE 0
A two-run single in the bottom of the fourth inning by Kyle Parks provided all the necessary run support for Hummel (2-1), who walked one and struck out two.
Matt Rustulka (Windsor, Ont./Riverside) retired the first two hitters in the fourth but, after Mike VanAlst was hit by a pitch and Dustin Mayner doubled to left, Parks' base hit therough the right side brought home both runners.
Singles from
Ryan Buter (North Muskegon, Mich.) in the third and
Andrew Ciennik (Waterford, Mich./Mott) in the sixth were the only hits allowed by Hummel. A historic moment occurred in the fifth inning, however, as
Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) was hit by a pitch for the 31st time in his career, setting a new WSU record.
Rustulka (1-4) allowed seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
Justin Sylvester (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) pitched a hitless 1.2 innings in relief.
GAME TWO: SAGINAW VALLEY STATE 3, WAYNE STATE 2
With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Brandon Schwanz hit a hard grounder to shortstop and, as
Cameron Walker (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) made a nice play on a bad hop to secure the ball, Schwanz beat the throw by a step and Mayner scored the game-winning run.
The game went into extra innings due to WSU's comeback efforts in the sixth and seventh, scoring a run in each inning to tie it at 2-2.
In the sixth,
Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) singled and advanced to second on an error by Kyle O'Boyle, allowing #C.J. Maszal# (Allen Park, Mich.), who led off the inning with a double, to score.
Dalman started the seventh inning with a single off Andrew Tidwell and, moments after being moved to second on a
Brad Guenther (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) sacrifice bunt, pinch runner
Alex Pierse (Clinton Twp., Mich./De La Salle) came in to score on a double by
Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland).
With
Billy Hurley (Mississauga, Ont./St. Aloysius Gonzaga) on the mound, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out. VanAlst hit a grounder which, after smacking against the leg of Hurley, he made a quick backhand throw to Guenther for the forceout at home. Mayner then struck out looking as WSU escaped with the score still tied.
The seventh inning was a microcosm for the game itself, as the Cardinals and Warriors stranded 15 and 13 runners, repectively.
A two-out RBI single by Drew Woock gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the third. The lead doubled in the fourth as Matt Hunt tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
Trojan led Wayne State with three hits in the game, while Wiseman and
Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.) had a hit and two walks apiece.
Wayne State used seven pitchers, with
Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) taking the loss (1-4) after coming on in the 10th inning. Mike Saunders (3-3), the fourth SVSU pitcher in the game, pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for the win.
