Warriors rebound from extra inning setback.

DETROIT -- After having its 19-game series winning streak snapped with a 2-1 setback in Tuesday's first game of a GLIAC doubleheader, the Wayne State University softball squad (25-20-1 overall, 13-10-1 GLIAC) rebounded for an 11-0 six inning victory over the visiting University of Findlay Oilers (20-20-1 overall, 8-17 GLIAC) in the nightcap.

UF's last win in the series was a 2-1 victory on April 1, 2005, at WSU.

In the opener, both starting pitchers - WSU's Sam Cain and Findlay's Julia Stalder - put up zeroes through the first three innings with each team only getting 10 batters to home plate.

In the top of the fourth, Calli Coppus had a leadoff single and Brittany Dauterman walked on the seventh pitch of the at bat.  Jaci Messmer singled to left, but pinch-runner Anna Britvec was caught in a rundown between third and home.  Dauterman was out at the plate on a fielder's choice, but Messmer scored an unearned run as Tori Allen reached on a WSU fielding error.

After stranding two runners in the fourth, the Warriors tied the game in the fifth.  Nikki Fulton had a one-out single and was erased at second on a fielder's choice.  Logan White tripled over the center fielder's head scoring Makelle Barski with the tying run.

WSU had the potential run on base in the seventh as Rebecca Stanley had a leadoff walk, but a pop out and a strikeout preceeded a single by Barski.  A ground out ended the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Oiler Jenna Motuza had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Coppus.  On a 2-0 pitch, Dauterman doubled to right center scoring Motuza.

Brittany Omelanchuk had a two-out single in the eighth, but a ground out ended the game.

Stalder allowed eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk, while Cain surrendered seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Rebecca Ryan had two of WSU's four hits.  She also became Wayne State's all-time leader in fielding putouts in the scond inning on a pop out by UF's Tori Allen.

Game two was a much different story as Wayne State pounded out 14 hits, had two three-run innings along with a five run frame, and eight different players had at least one hit.

WSU scored three times in the top of the third.  Fulton walked and Barski singled before a ground out advanced both runners into scoring position.  A single by Lauren Histed scored Fulton, while Barski scored on a ground out by Alison Allen.  Histed scored on a single by Omelanchuk.

Histed had a one-out single in the fifth to start another three-run inning.  After Allen walked, a double steal put two runners in scoring position.  Omelanchuk then laced a two-run double to left center and moved to third on a passed ball following a pitching change.  Ryan's single scored Omelanchuk to make it 6-0.

The Warriors had six hits and scored five runs in the sixth inning.  Fulton, Barski and White all singled to load the bases.  After a fielder's choice erased Fulton at the plate, Allen drilled a pitch off the leg of Findlay pitcher Tawna Whited scoring Barski.  Omelanchuk then hit the first pitch into right center for a two-run double.  Following a ground out, Stanley had a two-run single through the left side.

WSU starting pitcher Lauren McLaughlin only face three over the minimum (21 batters in six innings) as she allowed two hits and walked one.  She struck out two and had 10 ground ball outs.

Lauren Orban started for UF and allowed six earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings with one strikeout and two walks.  Whited surrendered the final five runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Omelanchuk, who had three hits in the contest, also drove in five runs, tied-for-third most by a Warrior in the last 10 years.

Histed, Stanley, Fulton and Barski all had two-hit games.

Wayne State is slated to have six home games this weekend with doubleheaders against Lake Erie College (Friday at 4 p.m., and Saturday at 1 p.m.), along with a Sunday twinbill versus Ferris State at noon.
