Softball Stays Alive With 4-1 Win Over Saginaw Valley

Warriors score three in seventh for victory.

Midland, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (29-24-1 overall) remained alive in the 2011 GLIAC tournament with a 4-1 victory over Saginaw Valley State University (35-16 overall) Friday afternoon at Fisher Stadium on the campus of Northwood University.

The elimination game was scoreless until one out in the top of the second when junior first baseman Rebecca Ryan smacked an 0-1 offering over the left centerfield fence putting the Warriors ahead 1-0.

SVSU, who had left a runner on base in three of the first four innings, knotted the score at one on back-to-back two-out doubles by Jess McKeith and Ashley Coffin.

Neither team would score in the sixth but WSU tallied three runs in the top of the seventh.  Junior third baseman Rebecca Stanley hit the first pitch of the frame up the middle for a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Sophomore left fielder Stephanie Foreman drilled a 1-2 pitch over the right center wall with one out snapping a 1-1 deadlock.  After a ground out, freshman center fielder Logan White doubled to left center past a diving Cardinal center fielder.  Junior shortstop Lauren Histed reached on an infield single moving White to third, where she scored on a passed ball.

WSU junior Sam Cain earned the win despite not a recording a strikeout.  She allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter.

Saginaw Valley's Jade Fulton, also a First Team All-GLIAC selection, suffered the loss (24-9) as she allowed eight hits and four runs (three earned).  She struck out eight and walked one.

Foreman was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit game.

Wayne State will play at noon on Saturday vs. Friday's loser of the Tiffin vs. Grand Valley contest.
