DETROIT - This Saturday the Wayne State University swimming and diving team will host Grand Valley State in a GLIAC dual meet featuring the two programs which in recent history have been the top two in the conference and among the best in NCAA Division II.
The Warriors and Lakers have exchanged first and second place finishes in each of the last four GLIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The Warriors finished ahead of the Lakers for the titles last year and in 2009, while GVSU edged Wayne State for the 2010 and 2008 crowns.
In terms of national finishes, Wayne State has the edge with a runner-up finish in 2009 and consecutive third-place showings the last two years. Grand Valley State came in ninth in 2009, fourth two years ago and sixth last season.
While the Lakers have won the last two dual meets against the Warriors, previously Wayne State was victorious in six out of seven since 2003.
On the women's side, Wayne State and Grand Valley State have been the top two teams at the conference championship each year since 2006. Wayne State has won five titles in that span, while GVSU claimed its lone championship in 2009.
The Warriors have finished in second place at the NCAA Championships three years running. The Lakers placed eighth in 2010 and ninth in both 2009 and 2011.
Wayne State has won five of the last six dual meets against GVSU, the only exception being a 122-121 win for the Lakers in 2009.
These two programs will face off at the Matthaei on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET
